National Honor Society (NHS) is an academic club that students can only join by invitation. They must meet the GPA requirement of 3.75 or higher and not have served disciplinary time.
However, acceptance is not guaranteed based on grades alone.
They must fill out an information packet listing extracurricular activities, volunteer service hours, and leadership positions. They must also write an essay on the enclosed topic relating to NHS.
NO late packets will be accepted.
The qualifications for membership are based on the four pillars of NHS:
-
Scholarship: The student scholar must be a junior or senior with at least a 3.75 GPA on a 5.0 scale.
-
Service: This involves voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community at large (not family), done on their own time (not during the school day and not as part of a class for which a grade is given) and without compensation.
-
Leadership: Student leaders are those who are positive, kind, inclusive, resourceful, good problem solvers, and idea contributors. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others.
-
Character: The student of good character is cooperative; demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability; follows school and classroom rules; shows courtesy, compassion, concern, and respect for others; and maintains a clean disciplinary record. The student must have no placement in ISS after the freshman year and have no placement in AEP at any time during their high school career.
Additional requirements:
1. Students must score well on faculty evaluations. All teachers and coaches who have worked with the student at any time are invited to fill out an evaluation.
2. Students will also fill out a detailed student information form and write a 200-350-word essay about one or more of the four pillars of the National Honor Society. The essay topic is in the enclosed packet they receive and will be different every year.
3. Based on the information packet, the essay, and the faculty evaluations, the NHS Faculty Council will make recommendations for the acceptance or non-acceptance of each prospective member.
4. Students will be notified whether or not they have been accepted.
5. Students who have been accepted must attend the Induction Ceremony in the FHS Auditorium.
Parents and students who would like more information about the NHS are encouraged to contact Mrs. Sydney Scheidemantel at sydneys@fisd.org
| How can I become a member? |

NHS Membership is available to any junior who meets the criteria for selection. This includes demonstrating excellence in four (4) areas: scholarship, service, leadership, and character. At Fredericksburg High School, students must have a minimum grade point average of 3.75 or better to be considered for selection. A selection committee of faculty members determines whether or not each student meets the other three criteria of character, leadership, and service. Students who are interested and are unsure if they meet the criteria are welcome to email Mrs. Sydney Scheidemantel at sydneys@fisd.org |
Students selected for the National Honor Society will be notified in October when an induction ceremony will be held.
